Website localisation

One of our high profile UK clients in the banking sector takes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) very seriously, which is one of the reasons we’re proud to work with them so closely. In addition to the annual report on their banking activities, they also choose to produce a website which acts as an online report on their activities in the field of sustainability, including community investment. We translated it into 7 languages for them.

What challenge did we take on?

They asked us to localise the English website into Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese for Taiwan, Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Thai. This encompassed translation of 100,000 words into the 7 required languages, subtitling of interviews embedded on the site, Flash and image localization, engineering and testing.

Arguably the biggest challenge was to translate content which relates to a bank, while being focused on a function (CSR) which contains very different concepts and terminology to regular banking-speak.

What did we do?

Although it was a lot of hard work, the localization, engineering and testing tasks are core activities for Asian Absolute and were accomplished by our team quite comfortably.

We are well aware of requirements specific to the Asian languages, such as the need to set Japanese and Thai linebreaks manually in Flash, and our translators translate directly into the html files using Trados.

It was essential to use translators and editors who could handle the CSR content as well as the banking. Asian Absolute is unusual in categorising our linguists according to industry sector expertise as well as functional specialism. Having worked with this client for several years, a quick search on our vendor database (cross-referencing Banking sector with CSR function and client name) brought up a selection of linguists who have performed well on CSR projects for this client in the past.

What was the outcome?

Our client’s enviable reputation for CSR has now spread across Asia. The website communicates in clear language many concepts that are not so well known in Asia as they are in Europe. We share our client’s hope that these translated websites will inspire Asian customers of other multinational corporations to seek out brands that are giving something back to the communities in which they operate.
